Responsibilities of having a pet

What to consider if your children want to have a pet

Children love pets, but many people may think having one is an extra burden and their houses will be dirty all the time, or this event will cause them stress, especially because they will worry if no one takes care of this pet. And these thoughts can come true if the pet is bought irresponsibly. Before adopting a new member of the family, it is necessary to analyze the reasons to have one, which include the space of the house for him or her, if his needs, such as affection, food, medicine, and recreation will be satisfied, no exceptions. If all these requirements are met, go ahead and get a lovely pet!

First, all the family members have to agree to adopt or buy a pet, so that, all of them will be responsible of his care. Parents have to be in charge of bigger duties, but children have to get involved as well in this process. It will make them understand there are other living beings, who experience their own needs, but are too similar to human beings. It means pets also have emotional and physical needs.

A pet at home is synonymous of benefits, as they can help children to be more kind, sociable and compassionate.  In addition, pets reinforce kid's self-esteem by providing security and confidence, as well as, protect them from dangers. Furthermore, pets make them develop healthy and hygiene habits, such as washing their hands after stroking them or when children are licked by their furry friends.

Choosing a suitable sort of pet for a family depends on factors as the house space, time to dedicate him, and expected budget to offer. There are animals that live for a long time, and others who need more cares. For instance, some breeds of dogs cannot live within a reduced space, while cats survive anywhere and are more independent; hamsters are small, but their lifetime is not long, compared to turtles that live more than 100 years.

In conclusion, having a pet has to be a decision taken responsibly by all the family members; otherwise, pets will be abandoned or gifted at some point of time. The kind of pet you choose has to be determined by factors as economic capacity, guarantee a good quality of life for the new family member, and to provide him a proper place to live in. Before getting a pet, bear in mind he represents more benefits than you can imagine, but you have to give him something in return: Much love and protection.

Do you like pets? Do you have one, two or more? What criteria did you use for getting them? What other suggestions would you add in favor of this post?

Please, leave your comments! Thanks for reading!

Tasso Hadjidodou

Tasso Hadjidodou

Who was Tasso Hadjidodou?

Guatemala has housed many distinguished personalities in her land, and one of them was the Greek-Belgian intellectual and cultural promoter, Tasso Hadjidodou.

Anastasios Hadjidodu Mouchatoris, called affectionately Tasso, was born in Roncur, Lieja, Belgium, on July 9, 1921. Born from Greek parents, learned Greek and French from his mother, and later on, Flemish, German and English. As a curious fact, he spoke 8 languages, including Walloon and Spanish. During his early childhood, he got involved with literature and arts, elements that made him develop a great love for culture.

Tasso studied Economics and Finance, but his real passions were reading and culture. In 1949, he and his wife Mariel came to Guatemala as a sort of adventure. Soon, he grew fond of Guatemala, and made this land his home, considering himself as another citizen. Then, began to work as a press attaché (a press agent) in the French Embassy in the country. In this position, he promoted Guatemalan culture and art by the creation of many organizations in favor of culture and sports; in addition, arranged plenty of festivals (Founder of History Center Festival,) congresses, workshops and seminars.

Tasso Hadjidodou contributed to the establishment of L’Alliance Française de Guatemala (Cultural center sponsored by the French Embassy, which is known in Spanish as Alianza Francesa de Guatemala.) He supported many Guatemalan artists, athletes, journalists and writers, and occupied several positions in different institutions. Furthermore, he was appointed as Director of the Guatemala's Municipality History Center Department [Dirección del Centro Histórico de la Municipalidad de Guatemala,] and cultural advisor in the French Embassy. He also was Emeritus Director of the Olympic Academy, Member of the Urban Cultural Board, President of the Association 'Forth World,' and finally, had a section as columnist in Prensa Libre, one of the most popular newspapers in Guatemala.

Tasso was awarded for his cultural approaches and art promotion by the Guatemalan government. Among the decorations and prizes he won, these ones can be mentioned: Orden del Soberano Congreso en Grado de Gran Cruz in 2004 (The highest decoration awarded by the Congress of Guatemala,) his name was given to the street where he used to live (Tasso Hadjidodou Alley, located at 6 avenida A and 11 calle, zona 1,) and a cafe. Also, it was made a sculpture in his honor that was placed in 'Paseo de la Sexta' [A famous pedestrian walkway in Guatemala City.]

Tasso Hadjidodou died in Guatemala City, on November 24, 2012, at the age of 91. He was an example to Guatemalans and thanks to his efforts, culture and artists have emerged within the country and abroad.
